Take a look….it’s in a book…

Did I just start my blog post with a rather catchy song that will be stuck in your head all day? Yes, yes I did and you’re welcome. Why? Because….

Growing up, books were a part of every day life. My mother read books (to my young eyes) by the minute, there were stacks around the house and I had quite a few stashed away myself.  While I went through a love/hate relationship with them (wanting to read what was of interest to me vs. having to read for school…dun…dun…dun) one thing was for certain, they IGNITED my imagination. Nothing could transport me to a place, a time, to really really get to know a person, like a book could. As I grew up, my fondness for children’s books didn’t diminish, but rather I added onto my collection. I really feel that there is much to be learned from children’s books, even well into adulthood. In fact I still read them! Digressing slightly…

When I became a teenager, I fell in love with historical romance novels (pun intended?). My one absolutely favorite above all others was “Pirate in my Arms” by Danelle Harmon. I loved the book so much that I would read it during class (shh!) and once even was called out for it by the teacher, but I was undeterred. I was nose-deep in 1700’s Cape Cod Piratical glory. There was no way I was putting that baby down. As it’s now out of print – but don’t worry I have two copies just in case one self combusts mysteriously (can books do that?).

Currently, I’ve been wandering down a more spiritual path. This is what my ^bookshelf^ looks like now. While I still take a break from the heavy-duty soul reading with a little fiction or even a children’s book, knowledge is what I’m after these days. Plenty of room and ways to expand your thinking, broaden your horizons, see new possibilities. I recently finished reading “The Creative Life” by Julia Cameron. While I consider myself to be a slower-than-most reader, I breezed through it in 2 days. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a light, but educational read. It’s a journal-style book of a few months in the life of Julia Cameron and I think it’s quite brilliant. As it takes place in New York, it was also fun for me to revisit places I’ve been while being across the country in Colorado.

I’ll leave you with a quote from the lovely Emma Watson, who sums it up quite beautifully:

“I like books that aren’t just lovely but that have memories in themselves.
Just like playing a song, picking up a book again that has memories
can take you back to another place or another time.” – Emma Watson

Do you have a favorite book that you re-visit or perhaps a boo that has changed your life?
I’m always looking for another good book and I have a feeling there are a few bookworms out there who’d agree.
