Time to let it go….

I love this quote but man, sometimes it’s a lot easier said than done! As some of you might know, my husband and I will making a cross-country trek to our new home in Colorado in just a teeny tiny bit over a month. I’ve never lived outside of the little state of Connecticut before, but I’ve definitely had my fair share of packing and moving and one thing that I have come to quickly realize is that I DO NOT LIKE IT!

Washing, wrapping, packing – these are not my ideas of fun, so hubby and I have decided that we are downsizing – A LOT. We are only going to be taking core furniture with us and those things that we simply can’t do without. It’s amazing how much stuff you can collect over time. At one point in my life I had 3 sets of dishes and there were only 2 of us!

Downsizing can sometimes be hard though. How are you going to know what you need in the future? What if it comes in handy? What should you keep or give away or sell? My #1 piece of advice? GO WITH YOUR GUT. If something keeps screaming at you that you need to keep it – KEEP IT. On the other hand, if you haven’t used it in several months (or even a year) I think it’s safe to say you can part ways.

Now moving and de-cluttering is on a smaller scale, but you can apply this to all aspects of your life. Even with moving you can start to de-clutter “past lives” and things that you don’t need. For instance, I used to save movie tickets or letters, dried flowers, Christmas cards, etc. I don’t really need those things anymore, probably haven’t looked at them since and they are just taking up space. You can also use the time to let go of things from past loves or relationships that no longer serve you. My girlfriends and I are even going to have a de-cluttering party to sort through my things, accompanied by wine and delicious food and rockin’ music. They might even go home with a score or two! Make it fun!

When you start to let go of things that you don’t need or that no longer or currently do not have a purpose in your life, you start to create space for new things and new experiences. I always feel a huge energy shift after I do this too. Everything starts flowing more freely and I feel more able to think and breathe.

So don’t be afraid, letting go is a blessing.
