Most Sundays my hubby goes away for the day to teach Bikram Yoga all day. I usually take the time to pamper the crap out of myself. Now, I am not much of a girlie girl, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t like to feel pretty. I still like to take care of myself and clean up a bit. So, on Sundays, (after letting myself sleep in!!) I take myself the “the spa”. I put on the spa station on Pandora and make a yummy smoothie or juice for breakfast. Then I make this fantastic home-made body scrub (which I found on Pinterest and you can find here) and I take a nice long shower, shave, wash my dreads, just get really nice and clean! Sometimes I even like to do a little sage cleansing, just to move into the next week with an open mind and heart.
After the shower, I take the time to moisturize. Arms, legs, face, feet, back, stomach, everything. All these parts of your body help you get through the week, carry you places, hold stress and tension – so give them a little love! You can even do a little self-massage while you are at it. My moisturizer of choice is Jojoba oil. It’s a fantastic natural oil that is almost equivalent to the oil we naturally produce as humans. Just remember, a little goes a loooooong way, so don’t use too much and it won’t break the bank either. I pick up a little bottle at Trader Joe’s for a few bucks and not only will it last me several months, it’s organic too!
Now the next part is essential. Get into your comfy clothes! Pajamas, sweats, yoga pants, whatever it is, comfort is key! I like to wear yoga pants with a t-shirt and a sweater or my fleece pj’s with a hoodie (although it’s getting a bit warm for that). Then I take care of fingers and toes. I have a little manicure kit that I picked up at CVS ($10 I think) and it’s great. It has a big and little nail clipper, emory board, cuticle cutter, cuticle pusher-back thingy, and maybe something else. It’s a great investment and then I get the look I love for barely anything and I didn’t have to leave the house! I don’t really care to have my nails painted, but you can do that too if you’d like!
Now that I am clean and relaxed and polished head to toe I make myself a spa-like lunch. This could be a big salad, a yummy soup, or maybe a stir-fry, you get the picture. Something with lots of veggies and lots of connection to Mama Earth. After lunch I usually watch inspiring videos on Youtube and listen to talks or lectures while I colour in a colouring book (I particularly like Mandalas). Sometimes I might go for a walk or hula hoop in the sun. If it’s rainy I might stay inside and do yoga, or read, or maybe even take a nap. I also try to play a little music too. Whatever you choose to do, let it stimulate and fuel your creativity and passion.
This usually brings me to the early evening when hubby comes home! The rest of the night is spent watching movies, maybe ordering some take out and otherwise just relaxing and enjoying each other and the lovely end to another week.
So the next time you have some time off and have the house to yourself (or send the hubby and kids elsewhere :D) take some time for self-care. It may not cost a bunch, but I promise it will make you feel like a million bucks!
